New "Reading" Blanket

What's better to do on the day after Thanksgiving than relax with a bit 'o knitting?

Over the years I've made a bunch of blankets for my family, friends, and babies of family and friends.  Never one for me.

Earlier this month I (finally) started a blanket for myself.  I had 9 skeins of a very soft green (Caron, Simply Soft, Dark Sage) and my favorite (and only) book for afghans & throws; I found an easy basket weave pattern and away I went.

Today I finished it!

This blanket is to live in our library... a small space upstairs where we have a wall of bookcases, my desk, and a "new" reading chair.  We made a trade with my sister of a comfy brown leather chair for our black leather sofa & chair.  It looks great in our space (she says her stuff looks great, too) - and now it has a nice little blankie to keep its reader warm on rainy fall days like today.

12-of-12: November 2009

I had some great ideas about what I wanted to do for today's 12-of-12.... a picture every hour from 6am till 6pm (selecting one from each hour for the 12 shots of the day) and I REALLY wanted to get a picture of a cow (since I was going to be doing a lot of country driving today).

I failed on each count.
BUT... I did get some really cool other shots.

8AM-ish:
On my way to Corning, NY.  It's cold this morning... hovering around freezing.

Noon-ish:

In Corning, NY... the home of Corning Glass & the Corning Museum of Glass.

Glass was an integral part of every building.

 

 

Here's one of Corning Glass' HQ.  Slightly hidden by this pretty tree, but you can still see all the glass that surrounds it.

I made this!

The hubby got me a flint-n-magnesium (for when the zombies come) so I can make fire out in the woods.  It's been hanging out, threatening to get lost since that day.  Today, I made a nice, bright, lanyard for it.  I'll hafta work pretty darn hard to lose it now. 

Quick, easy and fun.  

... and now...
I'm roaming around the house looking for other things to boondoggle.  Haha, look out dogs!

Turn the Page... Tuesday

 

YAY! Something new!

Today is 'Turn the Page.. Tuesday' - the brainchild of Adrienne of Some of a Kind.

What is TTP...T?  The first Tuesday of every month, bloggers (like Deb @ Barefoot Mom- who I learned from) post notes about what they're reading.  Be sure to check out these sites to see what good reads are out there... and then join in!

Currently, I'm in the middle of Book 2 of Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Series.  I'm loving it so far.  Sookie is such a lovable character and I've already been "bitten" by the story line, so I'm really looking forward to the rest of it.  You have to be a little open minded (or at least like vampires) to get into this story.  Sookie is a telepathic human and vampires (like her boyfriend, Bill) live out in the open, amongst humans, with "minority status" and drink synthetic blood.  It's a fun, quick read - I expect I'll be through it by the weekend... then on to Book 3!

Now, this one might not count as a "Turn the Page"... because I listened to it in audiobook format, but Friday I finished "Nina Kimberly the Merciless" by Christiana Ellis and wanted to share it.

 

Nina is the young daughter of a fearsome (tho deceased) barbarian conqueror... but she's stuck in a boring little town with nothing to do & a young (idiot) king who's deluded himself into thinking Nina is his girlfriend.  This is the story of her quest.  She meets new people & communicates with an intelligent dragon, fights battles, and learns lessons about life... all with some humor and funny geek-pop-culture references (like: the best place to find a hero needing a quest is in a tavern on a rainy night).  It's a great, strong-female story... I highly recommend it.

Well, that's my 'Turn the Page' for November.  Will have lots to share in December... more books, including A Confederacy of Dunces by J.K. Toole that I'm reading for Book Club.

Akron Falls Cache Log

At home, looking out the skylight... planning the day ahead

We couldn't pass up an opportunity like today - it was sunny and warm (for late October) and with all the fall leaves, we had to do some caching.  We also have a book of the "200 Waterfalls of Central & Western NY" which lists Akron Falls. 

 

SO, we put those two things together and here we are!  (Seems a lot of other people were thinking the same thing, because the trail was packed.  Families, photography buffs, dogs, ... everybody!)

Will post pictures soon, but this was a wonderful little hike.  The large part of the Lower falls was really flowing, bubbling whitecaps crested here.  Plus, there had to be 8-10 small rivulets on the left side of the falls.  It's hard to put the entire falls into perspective and guess the width... I'll just have to look that up.

We walked up to see how much of the Upper falls we could see, but trees/branches made it tough.  It looked to be rather impressive, so maybe we'll have to make a trip up this way in the spring.

We'll also need to make a 2nd trip because we didn't have a chance to find the bonus cache.... there were just too many people.  Oh well.  This is definitely a spot we won't mind visiting again.

At home, after the cache... Swept leaves off the driveway (so you could see it) & found these five beauties while working... they needed a spot on the blog.
